Edward Gibbon's major work, The History of the Decline and Fall of the Roman Empire (1776–88), combines two strands of eighteenth-century historiography to examine the development of civilization over 13 centuries. During his time in Lausanne, Gibbon was romantically involved with Suzanne Curchod, who later became the mother of Madame de Staël.
