Yes. I already have all those things listed in a longer document about medieval stories. The chivalric romances were not entertainment for common people, but the Arthurian romances we know were written well after the Black Death, which is a good marker in many cases for the end of the Middle Ages. Mallory wrote his Arthur in 1485, in French, not Latin. One thing most good stories from the Middle Ages have in common is they weren't Church art. All those Nordic and Celtic stories were not Christian. Beowulf and Roland were only a little bit Christian. Arthur was Christian, I'd say, but a transitional story, half medieval, half Renaissance. As a general rule, any story for which we know the author's name isn't entirely medieval.

Rome’s great orator was to have a decisive influence on the development of English prose style. ’s is known to every American schoolchild. Today, however, oratory is more usually thought of as a craft than as an art. Most critics would not admit advertising copywriting, purely commercial , or cinema and television scripts as accepted forms of literary expression, although others would hotly dispute their exclusion. The test in individual cases would seem to be one of enduring satisfaction and, of course, truth. Indeed, it becomes more and more difficult to categorize literature, for in modern civilization words are everywhere. Man is subject to a continuous flood of communication. Most of it is fugitive, but here and there—in high-level journalism, in television, in the cinema, in commercial fiction, in westerns and detective stories, and in plain, expository prose—some writing, almost by accident, achieves an aesthetic satisfaction, a depth and relevance that entitle it to stand with other examples of the art of literature.

With a littleingenuity, or by paying a little over the published price, you canget hold of it, and even if parts of it disgust you, it will stickin your memory. It is also an 'important' book, in a sensedifferent from the sense in which that word is generally used. As arule novels are spoken of as 'important' when they are either a'terrible indictment' of something or other or when they introducesome technical innovation. Neither of these applies to TROPIC OFCANCER. Its importance is merely symptomatic. Here in my opinion isthe only imaginative prose-writer of the slightest value who hasappeared among the English-speaking races for some years past. Evenif that is objected to as an overstatement, it will probably beadmitted that Miller is a writer out of the ordinary, worth morethan a single glance; and after all, he is a completely negative,unconstructive, amoral writer, a mere Jonah, a passive acceptor ofevil, a sort of Whitman among the corpses. Symptomatically, that ismore significant than the mere fact that five thousand novels arepublished in England every year and four thousand nine hundred ofthem are tripe. It is a demonstration of the impossibility of anymajor literature until the world has shaken itself into its newshape.
